Are we ever too young to take care of our skin?

Aging is one of the hottest topics today among men and women, young and old. As we forever chase the fountain of youth, it’s not surprising that we all want to know how to prepare ourselves for the battle ahead. One of … Continue reading

Beauty buzzword: BB cream

Half a century ago, a German dermatologist concocted an ointment to treat skin that had undergone harsh cosmetic procedures. Dubbed a “blemish balm” or “BB cream”, the creation gained popularity in Asia, with Korean customers leading the way.

Now, BB creams are all the rage in North American, as major brands launch their own version of the multi-tasking hybrid that aims to bridge the gap between skincare and cosmetics.

It’s hard to believe that any product can replace all the steps in your skincare routine without compromising the effectiveness of each. But when we compare the claims made by BB creams with the proven benefits of the Glissandra Serum, it’s clear that Glissandra has been developing its own interpretation of a BB cream in the decades of research behind its potent Serum.

Glissandra Serum is powered by Glissandrin™, a patented suite of health-promoting compounds extracted from the Schisandra berry. This youth-preserving fruit has been the foundation of thousands of years of traditional Chinese medicine, and its potent extracts are now the subject of intensive study in Western medicine, as scientists search for a sustainable way to maintain the function of the body’s organs as we age.

Let’s take a look at how the Glissandra Serum, with Glissandrin at its core, stacks up against BB creams.

BB Cream Glissandra Serum
Smooth skin after cosmetic treatments
  • Originally created to treat skin after cosmetic treatments.
  • Health-promoting properties of its key ingredient encourage the repair of skin cells after significant trauma.
  • Assists in suppressing inflammation and increasing the resistance of skin cells against adverse environmental factors, including light used in laser treatments.
Moisturize the skin
  • Contains commonly used ingredients to temporarily add moisture to the skin.
  • Helps inhibit the enzyme responsible for the depletion of collagen to promote skin’s supple, well-hydrated appearance.
  • 100% of clinical trial participants reported finding Glissandra Serum to be moisturizing.
Protect from the sun
  • Includes SPF to protect the skin from sun damage.
  • Empowers skin cells to prevent damage from exposure to harmful solar radiation (UV rays).
  • Enhances skin cell’s inherent antioxidant levels and helps to suppress the biological activities that contribute to photo-aging.
Primer
  • Creates surface for the application of additional layers of product.
  • Enhances skin health to create a smooth and supple canvas.
  • Highly lipid-soluble formulation readily penetrates the skin by passive diffusion, a natural absorption process, to prime the skin for cosmetics.
Even skin tone and hide blemishes
  • Limited range of tinted formulations, which function as a light-coverage foundation and concealer by masking uneven skin tone.
  • Creates a healthy, even skin tone and reduces the appearance of blemishes and age spots.
  • Minimizes the need for heavy concealers and foundations that can exacerbate existing skin conditions.
  • Enhances mitochondrial function by helping to increase ATP production, promoting skin health, and iimproving cellular metabolism to treat blemishes at the cellular level.
Save time
  • Designed to minimize the time spent during one’s daily beauty routine.
  • Effectively replaces multiple steps in a skincare regimen.
  • Fights mitochondrial decay by boosting the natural ability of skin cells to counter antioxidative damage, resulting in healthy, radiant skin.

Healthy, young-looking skin is now within reach; we simply need to shift the focus from covering skin to creating naturally beautiful skin at the cellular level; from fighting symptoms to addressing the root cause of skin issues, mitochondrial decay. Before jumping on the BB cream bandwagon, consider how you can achieve real, sustainable results from products that put skin health first.

Glutathione: The Experts Weigh In

In a recent post, we learned that Schisandrin B stimulates the production of glutathione (GSH), the body’s most potent natural antioxidant. Using anti-aging skincare products that contain Schisandrin B will effectively and drastically reduce the unsightly physical manifestations of skin aging, such as wrinkles, age spots, droopy eyelids, and sagging neck skin.

Like no man is an island, no organ of the body functions entirely independently of the others. Our cells work in harmony to create and sustain life. Though we have discussed the importance of glutathione in skin health, it is important to consider the wider-ranging implications of glutathione for our overall well-being.

Expert opinions

Here’s what some of the experts are saying about the role of glutathione in health:

“No other antioxidant is as important to overall health as glutathione. It is the regenerator of immune cells and the most valuable detoxifying agent in the body. Low levels are associated with early aging and even death.”

– Lorna R. Vanderhaeghe and Patrick J.D. Bouic, Ph.D., The Immune System Cure

“Raised glutathione levels fight the oxidation of circulating fats in the bloodstream, including cholesterol, retarding the process of plaque formation in the arteries – the underlying cause for most heart disease and stroke.”

– Nutrition Reviews 54: 1-30, 1996

“It is well known that aging is accompanied by a precipitous fall in GSH levels. Lower GSH levels are implicated in many diseases associated with aging, including cataracts, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s, atherosclerosis and others.”

– Journal of Clinical Epidemiology 47: 1021-26, 1994

The future of healthy aging

Scientists around the world have been pursuing progressively more advanced research on glutathione and Schisandrin B. We may not be able to stop the clock, but what we already know about these compounds demonstrates their significance in the campaign for healthy aging, starting with the body’s largest organ: our skin.

Beauty Buzzword: Glutathione

Some time ago, we shared some information on protecting your skin from the elements using antioxidants. But as you know, not all antioxidants are created equal.

If you haven’t already heard about glutathione, here’s your quick primer on the extraordinary antioxidant that’s set to make waves in the skincare world in 2012.

Antioxidants as free radical fighters

As the cells in our body perform their everyday functions, they incidentally create free radicals. These byproducts accumulate over time and become progressively more detrimental to our health.

In the context of aging, we know that free radical damage is a significant contributor to unsightly skin issues such as wrinkles, dark under eye circles, and age spots.

This is where antioxidants come in. We can use these powerful molecules to offset the negative effects of free radicals. One way to do this is by consuming a diet that includes antioxidant-rich fruits and vegetables – but that’s not the only way, especially since this doesn’t directly target skin cells.

Glutathione: the master antioxidant

Our cells are also able to produce their own antioxidants. Because glutathione is widely considered to be the strongest, it is also known as the “master” antioxidant.

Glutathione detoxifies our body of toxins and pollutants, increases our energy, repairs DNA damage, and optimizes our immune system. Imagine how that power would positively affect our skin, the body’s largest organ.

The body produces glutathione naturally, but certain compounds have been scientifically proven to encourage our cells to produce more of it. This is an important concept to consider in regards to caring for our skin, particularly as we age, since our body accumulates free radicals over time.

Fortunately, there are now products on the market that are able to stimulate the body’s natural glutathione production. When applied directly to the skin, they are an effective way to reverse the signs of skin aging.

The role of glutathione in anti-aging skincare

Glutathione is the powerhouse antioxidant on which other antioxidants depend to function properly. Antioxidants commonly found in anti-aging skincare products, such as Vitamins C and E and CoQ10, are less effective without glutathione.

A recent study published in the scientific journal, Fitoterapia, showed that Schisandrin B increased glutathione production at the cellular level. This means that these powerful compounds are able to help our cells naturally produce more glutathione to attack free radicals.

Schisandrin B is derived from the Schisandra berry, an herb commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Extracts from the Schisandra berry have been proven to be safe and effective in topical cosmetic applications. In over two decades of research and development, Glissandra Skincare has identified and isolated the most potent compounds from the Schisandra berry for use in its advanced anti-aging skincare products.

Keep your skin looking young, healthy, and beautiful

Do your skincare products promote the health of your skin by stimulating skin cells to produce glutathione? Can you find Schisandrin B on the ingredient list of the products you’re currently using? If you’re constantly struggling to fight aging skin, consider how much more effective it would be if your body was able to do more on its own.

Glutathione is changing anti-aging skincare. By taking a holistic, health-focused approach to caring for our skin, beautiful, younger-looking skin is finally within our reach.
